Fighting DNS resolving in Ubuntu 12.04 (server)

Guy's blog - di, 05/15/2012 - 13:48

I recently installed a DNS sever using Ubuntu 12.04.  The server should serve only my exernal domain, but should use an internal server for it's own name resolution.

Setting dns-nameservers to the correct ip in /etc/network/interfaces did not work on this host (but does on all my non-dns hosts).

After some digging, I found the cause: resolvconf always reverts to nameserver 127.0.0.1 which in turn queries the hosts in dns-nameservers.  Because my host is already a nameserver, 127.0.0.1 points to my bind instance instead of a caching daemon.

The solution I found was to put my entries in /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head, this way they end up on top of the resolv.conf file and the real DNS server gets queried first!

Software testing and unexpected failures

Guy's blog - ma, 02/27/2012 - 18:06

Last week, I released a new version of eLAS, a PHP based web application.  This version included a combination of changes in 2 branches., trunk and an experimental branch that introduced the Mootools javascript framework.  Both branches received significant testing and worked and behaved well.

The merge with the Mootools branch happened very late in the 2.2 cycle because version 3 (which would have gotten this) will not happen for at least another year.

So, after merging in the Mootools branch, I tested it in full using my own (Linux) laptop and it worked great.

The upgrade on all sites went extremeley smooth, but user reports of failures started coming in hours later.  They all related to IE (only version 8 confirmed).

Apparently, IE8 cannot handle the combination of the new Mootools AJAX calls and the legacy javascript that did XMLHttpRequets.  All other browsers can (as per usual).

So, for the next releases, I'll make sure I get to test the horrific IE browser much deeper and avoid last-minute merges, no matter how well tested they where separately...  And now on to two bugfix releases to get this behind me...

Another Linux Identity article

Guy's blog - ma, 02/27/2012 - 00:52

My latest article titled 'Ubuntu and Gnome 3, from unity to divergence' will be published in the upcoming editon off Linux Identity.

If I find the time. I'm going to put an updated list of my articles up on this site (with links when allowed).

Why does the upgrade-manager in precise insist on removing skype?

Guy's blog - vr, 02/03/2012 - 11:39

After upgrading to Precise, I noticed that Skype was uninstalled.  But it was easily fixed by downloading the deb from Skype's site.

But now, at each update via-update manager, it says the skype package should have been removed and I need to remove it before proceeding?

Is this a bug?  Any workaround?

Any recommendations for a Linux/BSD based community Spambox?

Guy's blog - do, 02/02/2012 - 12:42

I'm looking for an integrated distribution/VM appliance to do virus and SPAM filtering, much in the way that spamtitan does it.  Having a GUI for users would be a huge plus.

So far, I only found proprietary solutions, so if anyone knows a community project that does the same, please recommend it to me!

Thanks

PS.  Yes, I know mailscanner and amavis, been running them for years :-)

If the nmbs becomes any less punctual

Guy's blog - wo, 02/01/2012 - 13:11
  • People will start applauding IF a train makes it to the destination like they do when airplanes land
  • you start looking for the hidden interdimensional wormhole to get back to your own reality should a train arrive on time
  • You'll have to check the news on a smartphone from within the station to know if they are on strike or not because there's no difference in service level
